Beware of Xarelto

While the use and treatment of some FDA-approved drugs can cause serious side effects, it is important that the public become aware of products whose side effects may be worse than originally expected. One of these products is an anticoagulant known as Xarelto. Approved in 2011, Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is one of the newest blood thinners on the market and is manufactured by Bayer and marketed by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Blood thinners work by interrupting the blood clotting process. Xarelto has been marketed as being easier to use than one of its competitors, Warfarin (known by the brand name Coumadin). For decades, Warfarin was the only medication available to people at risk of strokes and other conditions involving blood clots. One of its most attractive features was that Warfarin has an antidote that can reduce the risk of uncontrollable hemorrhaging.

While bleeding is known to be commonly associated with anticoagulants, it has been alleged that Xarelto is more dangerous than other blood thinners as no antidote is known to exist to reverse Xarelto’s blood-thinning effects. This means that in case of an emergency, Xarelto patients may experience irreversible bleeding problems, including life threatening internal and gastrointestinal hemorrhaging.

Moreover, in 2012, the FDA reported that three times more people died from adverse events while on Xarelto compared to Warfarin.

In order to hold drug companies accountable for manufacturing dangerous products, often times it depends upon those individuals who have been injured to come forward with a lawsuit. There are currently thousands of Xarelto lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturers on behalf of those who have allegedly suffered a serious injury as a result of Xarelto.

Some injuries that Xarelto users have allegedly suffered include:

  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Intestinal Bleeding
  • Brain Hemorrhaging
  • Uncontrollable Bleeding
  • Death
